    • Head of the Laboratory of Clinical Microbiology and Professor of Medicine at the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition.
    • Professor of Medicine and Infectology at UNAM since 1986 and tutor of the Biomedical Sciences and Medical Sciences programs at UNAM since 1989.
    • Full member of the National Academy of Medicine (1999), Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (2000); member of the Councils of Internal Medicine (1997-2005) and Infectology (1994-1998). Member of the Advisory Committee of the National Program for the Control of Tuberculosis (since 2001).
    • Member of the committees to review and evaluate research projects or awards or recognitions in CONACYT, National Institutes of Health of the United States (NIH), Wellcome Trust, Mexican Foundation for Health, Chilean Council of Sciences and Technology, Glaxo-SmithKline Foundation, and Pfizer Foundation.

    Featured projects:

    • Founder of the Mexican Network for the Study of Bacterial Resistance, the Mexican Consortium for the Study of TB, and the Mexican Candidemia Network. Principal Investigator and Founder of the National Clinical Laboratory for Maximum Biological Safety to study of tuberculosis and emerging diseases located at INCMNSZ.
    • He has been distinguished with 38 national and international awards for his research work, including National Institute of Health Award (6 times), National Research Award by the Glaxo Foundation (4 times), Association Award Mexican of Infectology and Clinical Microbiology (15 occasions), FUNSALUD 2003 Biennial Award in Ophthalmology, CIBA-GEIGY Award in Clinical Research in Rheumatology, among others. He conducts basic, clinical, and epidemiological research in tuberculosis and antimicrobial resistance with funding from the NIH, Wellcome Trust.
